Casting Off the Unspoken: 2000, 2001

"Casting Off the Unspoken" was commissioned by the Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota, to provide a participatory element to a photography exhibition about hospice.

Offered as a respite to the intensity of the photographs, the chapel structure provided an opportunity for the audience to reflect on a personal loss, for which they might still have words unspoken. Messages could be written on slips of paper and dropped into water in the boat-vessel, where they melted away. Following the 9/11 attacks, "Casting Off" was reinstalled to provide a space for the community to grieve the tragedy.
